Anthony Bernal, a senior advisor to First Lady Jill Biden, has been subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee amid an investigation into the Biden administration’s use of the autopen—a device that automatically applies the president’s signature. Republicans allege aides, possibly including Bernal, may have concealed President Biden’s cognitive state or misused the autopen to sign pardons and other essential documents  .

Bernal received a subpoena ordering him to testify on July 16, after declining a voluntary interview following the lifting of executive privilege  .

Some local Voices Weigh In:

  • State Rep. Jake Teshka (R–South Bend) said, “Hoosiers deserve clear answers when federal aides bypass standard procedure. It’s about trust in our institutions.”

  • Sen. Shelli Yoder (D–Bloomington) described the GOP probe as “a partisan distraction” and urged Indiana lawmakers to remain focused on budget priorities like education and roads.

  • Mayor Joe Hogsett (D–Indianapolis) called the House subpoenas “political theater,” noting federal uncertainty doesn’t help local planners. He emphasized, “We need federal cohesion—even in conflict.”

Why This Matters in Indianapolis:

  • Trust and transparency: Misuse of an autopen or failure to clarify presidential decision-making could fuel doubts about the dependability of federal programs impacting Indiana—from infrastructure projects to public health initiatives.

  • Legal fallout: If any autopen-signed actions are ruled invalid, local programs underpinned by executive orders or pardons could be delayed or revisited, potentially disrupting planning and funding.

  • Election implications: With the 2026 midterms approaching, Indiana Democrats may face renewed pressure to address internal messaging and staff conduct—issues amplified by Anthony Bernal’s revelations and Lindy Li’s earlier criticisms.

  • We the people need to know the truth, which is what the HE seeks.
