Fever Erupt for 113 in Chicago as Caitlin Clark and Indiana Rediscover Their Purpose

CHICAGO — Caitlin Clark didn't need a career high Sunday night to put on one of the best shows of her professional career.

She needed 37 points, 10 assists and a 23-point Indiana Fever victory(and Kelsey Mitchell to just be Kelsey Mitchell -- so consistent in 20 plus point games!).

Fever 113, Sky 90.

On the second night of a back-to-back, without injured All-Star Aliyah Boston and at the end of a punishing stretch of five road games in eight days, Clark and the Fever didn't stagger toward the finish line Sunday night at Wintrust Arena.

They sprinted through it.

Clark poured in 37 points on 13-of-24 shooting, added 10 assists and produced another spectacular double-double as Indiana overwhelmed Chicago. She made three of four free throws and played 32 minutes before finally heading to the bench with the outcome decided.

It wasn't Clark's career high — that remains 45 — but it hardly mattered.

This was a superstar taking control of a game her team badly wanted.

And perhaps more importantly for Indiana, it was a team demonstrating that it still has another gear as the WNBA season moves toward its most important games.

Clark Was Everywhere

Chicago stayed with Indiana for much of the night.

The teams were tied 28–28 after the first quarter, and Chicago actually carried a 51–50 lead into halftime. The Fever weren't running away with anything.

Then Indiana changed the game.

The Fever outscored Chicago 33–26 in the third quarter, taking an 83–77 advantage into the fourth. And when Chicago needed a final push to make things interesting, Indiana delivered the knockout instead.

The Fever poured in 30 fourth-quarter points while holding the Sky to just 13.

That's a 30–13 fourth quarter on the road.

What had been a one-point halftime deficit became a 23-point victory.

Clark was at the center of it all. Her final line — 37 points and 10 assists — meant she directly scored or created a substantial portion of Indiana's offense. Chicago faced the familiar Clark dilemma: pressure her and risk allowing her to find an open teammate, or give her room and watch her attack herself.

Neither option worked particularly well Sunday. INDIANA'S BACK COURT WAS UNSTOPPABLE IN ELIMIATING THE SKY FROM THE WNBA PLAYOFFS.

Fever Find Another Answer Without Aliyah Boston

The performance becomes even more impressive when considering who wasn't there.

Aliyah Boston did not play because of a right lower-leg injury. Boston had played 30 minutes Saturday against New York, scoring 22 points with six assists and three rebounds before being ruled out Sunday. She entered the Chicago game averaging 17.0 points and a team-leading 8.4 rebounds.

Losing Boston on the second night of a back-to-back could have been devastating.

Instead, Indiana scored 113 points.

Makayla Timpson helped fill the enormous hole inside and finished as Indiana's leading rebounder with nine boards, according to the updated game statistics.

That's the encouraging part for Fever fans.

Indiana wasn't simply waiting for Clark to rescue it while everyone else watched.

The Fever played like a team with purpose.

Mitchell and Clark Remain a Nightmare Combination

Kelsey Mitchell's presence also changes the equation for every team trying to defend Clark.

Opponents can't simply devote their entire defensive game plan to No. 22 because Indiana has another elite scorer waiting to punish the extra attention.

That balance has transformed Indiana into one of the WNBA's most dangerous offensive teams.

Clark can stretch a defense far beyond the three-point line. Mitchell can attack from virtually anywhere. Boston, when healthy, gives Indiana an interior presence. And when the supporting cast rebounds, defends and converts the opportunities created by its stars, the Fever become extraordinarily difficult to contain.

Chicago found that out Sunday.

The Numbers Tell the Story

The quarter-by-quarter scoring reveals just how dramatically Indiana seized control:

Final: Indiana 113, Chicago 90.

Clark led everyone with 37 points and also led the game with 10 assists. Timpson's nine rebounds were a game high for Indiana.

For Chicago, Natasha Cloud led the Sky with 16 points and seven assists. Azura Stevens contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, while Aicha Coulibaly added 12 points and six rebounds.

The most important statistic, however, may have been that fourth quarter.

Indiana 30. Chicago 13.

That's how a good team turns a close road game into a rout.

A Response After New York

The timing makes this victory particularly meaningful.

Indiana had lost 109–102 at New York on Saturday and then had to travel to Chicago for Sunday's game.

Boston was unavailable. Legs could reasonably have been tired. Indiana had reached the final stop of five road games in eight days.

It would have been easy to understand a tired performance.

Instead, Indiana scored 113.

There is an important difference between losing basketball games and allowing losses to change the direction of a season.

The Fever refused to let that happen Sunday.

Clark's 37 Sends a Message

There will always be extraordinary attention surrounding Caitlin Clark.

Every missed shot becomes a discussion. Every turnover gets dissected. Every Fever loss seems to produce another round of questions about Clark, the coaching, rotations, chemistry and whether Indiana is truly capable of contending with the WNBA's best teams.

Sunday offered a much simpler response.

Thirty-seven points. Ten assists. A 23-point road victory.

Clark didn't just score. She created.

She didn't merely accumulate numbers in a losing effort. Her numbers came while Indiana transformed a 51–50 halftime deficit into a 113–90 victory.

That's the distinction that matters.

Maybe This Team Is Just Getting Started

The Fever have endured enough close games and frustrating moments this season to test the patience of their fan base.

Sunday night was the opposite scoring over 110 points. CC woke up knowing it would be a good one!

Indiana didn't allow Chicago to hang around until the final possession. It didn't need Clark to attempt some desperate miracle with seconds remaining.

The Fever took care of business.

They took a six-point advantage into the fourth quarter and turned it into a rout.

And they did it without Boston.

Indiana now gets several days before returning home to Gainbridge Fieldhouse to face Connecticut on Friday, August 28. Boston's health will obviously be worth watching during the break.

But Indiana returns home having learned something important about itself.

When adversity arrived, this team didn't fold.

When Chicago stayed close, Indiana didn't panic.

And when the fourth quarter began, Caitlin Clark and the Fever didn't simply try to protect a lead.

They buried the Sky.

Fever 113. Sky 90.

Caitlin Clark: 37 points, 10 assists.

No, it wasn't Clark's career high.

But on a Sunday night in Chicago, it was something potentially more important for the Fever:

a superstar performance in a statement victory from a team that suddenly looks very much alive for the stretch run.
