Friday Night Lights Return: 15 Headlines From a Wild Opening Weekend of Indiana High School Football

INDIANAPOLIS — The lights came on, the marching bands returned, student sections filled up and football once again became the center of attention in communities from Lake Michigan to the Ohio River.

Indiana's 2026 high school football season officially opened Friday, August 21, and it didn't take long to produce blowouts, rivalry victories, an overtime thriller, a three-overtime battle and some early indications of which programs may still be playing when the state championships arrive at Lucas Oil Stadium in November. The IHSAA calendar has the state finals scheduled for November 27–28.

More than 150 games were played across Indiana on opening weekend, giving Hoosiers their first real look at the 2026 contenders. Here are 15 headlines that caught the Hoosier Enquirer's attention.

1. Carmel Sends a 47–0 Message to Fishers

Perhaps no score in Central Indiana jumped off the page quite like this one:

Carmel 47, Fishers 0.

Opening night doesn't get much more convincing than that. The Greyhounds didn't merely beat their Hamilton County rival; they kept Fishers completely off the scoreboard while hanging 47 points on the Tigers.

For a Carmel program accustomed to enormous expectations, it was an opening-night statement that will immediately get the attention of the rest of Class 6A.

2. Brownsburg Looks Every Bit Like No. 1

If anyone expected preseason No. 1 Brownsburg to ease into the season, forget it.

The Bulldogs went on the road and defeated No. 6 Lawrence North 48–25 in one of the state's premier opening-night matchups.

Putting 48 points on a highly regarded Lawrence North team is an impressive way to begin a season. Brownsburg entered Week 1 carrying the biggest target in Indiana, and nothing Friday night suggested the Bulldogs intend to surrender that position easily.

3. Westfield Rolls in Fort Wayne

Westfield was just as impressive.

The Shamrocks traveled north to Homestead and returned home with a 49–21 victory.

That's 49 points on the road in Week 1 for a Westfield team already considered among Indiana's elite. With Carmel and Westfield both making emphatic opening statements, Hamilton County again looks like one of the centers of Indiana high school football.

4. Warren Central Spoils Center Grove's Opener

One of the biggest results of the evening came in Johnson County.

Warren Central 20, Center Grove 14.

The Warriors went into Center Grove and emerged with a six-point victory, immediately establishing themselves as a team to watch in Class 6A.

Center Grove has become synonymous with championship-level football under Eric Moore, which makes any road victory there significant. Warren Central didn't need 40 or 50 points to make its statement. Twenty was enough.

5. Ben Davis Takes Down Cathedral

Another Indianapolis heavyweight matchup went to Ben Davis.

The Giants defeated Cathedral 33–27 in a game matching two of Indiana's most recognizable football programs.

There aren't many opening-week games carrying more tradition than Cathedral-Ben Davis. Six points separated them this time, and Ben Davis gets an immediate résumé-building victory.

6. New Palestine Beats a Strong Illinois Visitor

New Palestine didn't schedule an easy opener.

The Dragons welcomed Wheaton St. Francis from Illinois and came away with a 28–17 victory.

That is precisely the kind of interstate test that can prepare a contender for what comes later.

New Palestine begins 1–0 and once again appears capable of being a major factor this fall.

7. Carroll Hangs 54 on Hamilton Southeastern

This one deserves attention throughout the state.

Carroll (Fort Wayne) 54, Hamilton Southeastern 23.

HSE is hardly an unknown opponent, making Carroll's 31-point victory one of the most impressive offensive performances of opening night.

If you're looking for an early-season team whose stock rose considerably Friday night, Carroll belongs on the list.

8. Noblesville Explodes for 64

Apparently Noblesville's offense didn't need a warm-up game.

The Millers overwhelmed Indianapolis Arsenal Tech 64–0.

A 64-point offensive performance is noteworthy enough. Combining it with a shutout makes the result impossible to ignore.

Hamilton County suddenly has Carmel, Westfield and Noblesville coming out of opening night having scored 47, 49 and 64 points, respectively.

9. Lawrence Central Scores 67

Noblesville wasn't alone in lighting up the scoreboard.

Lawrence Central demolished Jeffersonville 67–20.

That's 87 combined points, 67 of them belonging to Lawrence Central.

It's only August, but any team capable of putting nearly 70 on the board in its first game deserves immediate attention.

10. Roncalli Loses a Three-Overtime Heartbreaker

Opening weekend also produced one of those games players and fans may remember all season.

Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger edged Roncalli 15–14 in three overtimes.

It wasn't the result Roncalli wanted, but surviving three overtime periods in an opener is about as dramatic an introduction to the season as anyone could ask for.

11. Pendleton Heights Wins an Overtime Thriller

Another opening-night nail-biter came between Pendleton Heights and Lebanon.

Pendleton Heights 43, Lebanon 42 in overtime.

Eighty-five points and a one-point margin. That's Friday night football.

Games like this are also reminders that high school football isn't merely about rankings and championship contenders. In towns across Indiana, one play in August can become something classmates are still talking about years later.

12. Penn Makes a Statement Against Valparaiso

Northern Indiana had its own heavyweight result.

Penn defeated Valparaiso 49–24, an impressive opening victory for one of the state's most historically recognizable football programs.

Penn putting 49 on the board is going to get attention around Michiana and beyond.

13. Crown Point Starts With a 42–7 Victory

Northwest Indiana also saw Crown Point begin its season emphatically.

The Bulldogs defeated Lowell 42–7.

A 35-point opening-night victory puts Crown Point right back into the conversation as Northwest Indiana begins sorting out its contenders.

14. Bloomington South Owns Bloomington — At Least for One Night

Rivalry games mean something different.

Bloomington South defeated Bloomington North 44–6, earning city bragging rights in emphatic fashion.

That's not merely a 1–0 record. That's a score that students, alumni and families on both sides will remember until these schools meet again.

15. Yorktown Scores 83 — Yes, 83

And then there was Yorktown.

Yorktown 83, Anderson 0.

You read that correctly.

Eighty-three.

It was one of the most eye-popping scores anywhere in Indiana on opening night and a reminder of just how quickly a high school football game can get away from a team.

Other Scores That Caught Our Attention

There were plenty more. Avon beat Decatur Central 31–6. Zionsville handled Pike 24–6. Franklin Central defeated Plainfield 31–7. Guerin Catholic beat McCutcheon 22–14, while North Central edged Brebeuf 42–37. Greenwood defeated Seymour 41–20, and Mooresville beat Columbus East 34–21.

Elsewhere, East Central shut out Lawrenceburg 21–0, Fort Wayne Snider edged Warsaw 33–30, LaPorte beat New Prairie 34–21, Griffith erupted for a 63–13 victory over Highland, and Owen Valley crushed Brown County 64–0.

WRTV's The Zone alone featured highlights from 25 Central Indiana games Friday night, illustrating just how extensive the opening-week action was.

Football Is Back in Indiana

There is something different about the first Friday night of football season in Indiana.

Basketball may occupy a unique place in Hoosier history, but on a late-summer Friday night, football owns hundreds of Indiana communities. Stadium lights become visible from miles away. Parking lots fill. Bands play. Cheerleaders return to the sidelines. Students paint their faces. Parents who watched these same schools decades earlier return to watch another generation.

And then the ball gets kicked.

By midnight Friday, the first chapter of the 2026 season had already produced plenty to discuss.

Carmel 47–0. Brownsburg 48–25. Westfield 49–21. Warren Central over Center Grove. Ben Davis over Cathedral. Carroll with 54. Noblesville with 64. Lawrence Central with 67. Yorktown with an astonishing 83.

The first Friday night provided some answers, but probably created even more questions.

Is Carmel back among the state's most dangerous teams? Can anyone slow Brownsburg? How good is Westfield? Was Warren Central's victory at Center Grove a preview of something much bigger? Is Carroll ready to become a serious northern Indiana championship threat?
