Multiple Indianapolis Men Arrested After High-Speed Chase on I-65 in Tippecanoe County

Gregg Smith

Indianapolis, Ind. - In a dramatic turn of events on Friday night, three men from Indianapolis found themselves in custody following a high-speed chase initiated by a routine traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Tippecanoe County.

According to the Indiana State Police, the incident unfolded just after 10:30 p.m. when Trooper Bradley Howell pulled over a 2015 Ram 1500 truck near the 178-mile marker close to the Indiana 43 exit. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Darryl Caldwell, was initially stopped for a traffic violation. However, during the interaction, Trooper Howell observed indicators of potential criminal activity, which led to Caldwell's sudden attempt to flee.

The chase extended into White County, with Caldwell driving erratically northbound on I-65, then west on Indiana 18 to U.S. 231, before turning back onto I-65 southbound. The pursuit ended when police deployed tire deflation devices at the original stop location, causing the truck to lose control. The vehicle veered off, struck a guardrail, sideswiped another car, and finally came to rest in a ditch.

No injuries were reported during the incident, but the aftermath led to significant drug seizures. Police recovered from both the truck and along the chase route approximately 30 grams of methamphetamine, 18 grams of fentanyl, over 50 pills believed to be narcotics, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a sum of U.S. currency.

The three occupants of the truck were apprehended:

- Darryl Caldwell, 26, faces 15 charges, including 10 felonies for drug dealing and criminal confinement.

- Jordan Lavi Warren, 18, is charged with nine counts, seven of which are felonies, including drug dealing and obstruction of justice.

- Jason Reynolds, 45, faces 10 charges, with seven felony counts, mirroring some of Warren’s charges.

As of Monday morning, Tippecanoe County Jail records indicate that Caldwell remains in custody, while Warren and Reynolds have secured release on bond.

This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and related crimes on Indiana's highways. The combination of traffic stops leading to the discovery of significant drug hauls underscores the challenges and dangers faced by officers in their daily duties. The case will proceed through the legal system, with more details potentially emerging as the investigation continues.
