Indianapolis, February 10th, 2025 - It was reported the political drama spills into the Marion County Republican Party, allegations have emerged that Cindy Mowery, the current Director of Voter Registration and President of the Marion County Fairgrounds, has threatened Elizabeth Williams, a candidate for Vice Chairwoman in the upcoming GOP leadership election.

According to reports and text messages viewed by the Hoosier Enquirer, Mowery allegedly told Williams, "You don't have permission to run," suggesting an attempt to dissuade her from competing for the vice chair position alongside John Schmitz, who recently announced his run for Chairman. Schmitz had publicly endorsed Williams for the position just four days ago on social media platforms, signaling a united front with the slogan "#MakeSchmitzHappen."

The Hoosier Enquirer reached out to the Schmitz campaign for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication. However, a current Precinct Committee Member, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident and expressed dismay over Mowery's actions. This member stated, "Such threats are not only unethical but also undermine the democratic process within our party."

Mowery's involvement in the local GOP extends to her role as Director of Voter Registration, a position that has now come under scrutiny. Following the revelation of these threats, several Precinct Committee Members have called for Mowery's resignation from her position within the party, citing concerns over her conduct and its implications for the integrity of party elections.

The backdrop to this controversy is further complicated by ongoing federal investigations at the Marion County Fairgrounds, where Mowery currently serves as President. The investigation reportedly stems from the tenure of Abdul-Hakim Shabazz, who briefly held the presidency and is now under investigation for financial misconduct at the fairgrounds. Although Mowery took over after Shabazz, the association with this ongoing investigation has added another layer of complexity to her role in local politics.

The political landscape in Marion County has been turbulent in recent years, with the GOP looking to stabilize after several leadership changes. The election for party leadership positions, including the roles of Chairman and Vice Chairwoman, is crucial for setting the direction and strategy of the local Republican Party moving forward.

This incident raises questions about internal party dynamics, the ethics of political campaigning, and the influence of current officeholders on candidate selection processes. As the GOP in Marion County navigates these challenges, members and observers alike are keenly watching how this situation will unfold and what it might mean for future party governance and cohesion.
