As Indiana’s Secretary of State, Diego Morales has emerged as a dedicated public servant committed to strengthening the state’s electoral processes and upholding the values that resonate with Hoosiers. His leadership reflects a focus on ensuring fair, secure, and transparent elections, aligning with Indiana’s priorities of safeguarding the democratic process. Through his collaborative efforts with the Indiana State Legislature and his proactive stance on election integrity, Morales has demonstrated a commitment to putting Indiana’s interests first. The Hoosier Enquirer, as a 501(c) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public, highlights Morales’ work to inform voters about his contributions, while maintaining our neutral stance and refraining from endorsements.

Morales, a Guatemalan-American who immigrated to the United States as a teenager, brings a unique perspective to his role as Indiana’s Chief Election Officer. His journey from a high school graduate in Sellersburg to a key state official underscores his belief in the American Dream and the importance of protecting the democratic principles that make it possible. Since taking office, Morales has prioritized policies that aim to prevent voter fraud, enhance voter identification requirements, and ensure that only eligible U.S. citizens participate in Indiana’s elections.

One of Morales’ notable achievements is his work with the Indiana State Legislature to advance election integrity laws. In 2025, Morales championed the passage of House Bill 1680 and Senate Bill 10, which strengthen safeguards against voter fraud and reinforce the requirement for valid photo identification at polling locations. These measures aim to bolster public confidence in the electoral system by ensuring that every vote cast is legitimate. Morales has also been vocal about preventing non-citizens from voting, emphasizing that “only U.S. citizens can vote in Indiana. Period.” His efforts to clarify and enforce these standards have included the placement of bilingual “Vote Here” signs at polling locations, reminding voters of the citizenship and ID requirements in both English and Spanish.

Morales’ commitment to election integrity extends beyond legislative victories. In collaboration with Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, Morales has taken bold steps to verify the citizenship status of registered voters. Last year, the duo requested assistance from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to confirm the eligibility of over 585,000 voters who registered without state-issued identification. When federal officials failed to respond, Morales and Rokita filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in April 2025, seeking to compel cooperation. This legal action underscores Morales’ determination to ensure that Indiana’s voter rolls are accurate and that only eligible voters participate in elections. “As Indiana’s Chief Election Officer, ensuring the integrity of our elections is non-negotiable,” Morales stated, reflecting his unwavering resolve.

This week, Morales received a significant nod of support from Attorney General Todd Rokita, a figure widely respected among conservative Republicans for his strong stance on issues like immigration enforcement and voter integrity. Rokita’s endorsement highlights Morales’ alignment with leaders who prioritize policies that put Indiana and its citizens first. While Rokita’s support signals confidence in Morales’ leadership, it also underscores the shared vision of protecting Hoosier values through robust election laws and proactive governance.

Morales’ work has not been without challenges. Critics, including some voting rights advocates, have raised concerns about the timing and scope of his voter verification efforts, arguing that they could inadvertently affect eligible voters. However, Morales has maintained that his actions are driven by a commitment to accuracy and transparency, not exclusion. His office has emphasized that the verification process is conducted “out of an abundance of caution” to protect the integrity of Indiana’s elections without removing eligible voters from the rolls.

As a naturalized U.S. citizen, Morales brings a personal understanding of the importance of lawful citizenship and civic participation. His leadership reflects a deep respect for the electoral process and a determination to ensure that every Hoosier’s vote is counted fairly. By working to strengthen voter ID laws, combat potential fraud, and prevent non-citizen voting, Morales has positioned Indiana as a leader in election integrity—a cornerstone of what many describe as an “America First” approach to governance.

The Hoosier Enquirer recognizes Diego Morales’ efforts to uphold the sanctity of Indiana’s elections and educate voters about their rights and responsibilities. While we remain a nonpartisan organization committed to informing the public without endorsing candidates, we believe it is important to highlight the work of leaders like Morales who are shaping the future of Indiana’s democratic process. As Hoosiers look to the future, Morales’ focus on secure elections and transparent governance offers a model for ensuring that the state’s elections remain a trusted foundation of democracy.
