Walmart and Sam's Club Launching Tap to Pay at Registers Starting Monday

Indianapolis, IN – August 22, 2026

Hoosiers shopping at Walmart and Sam’s Club will soon have a faster, more convenient way to check out. The retail giant announced Friday that Tap to Pay is coming to select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations beginning Monday, August 24.

The contactless payment option will expand to all U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026, with fuel stations expected to follow by mid-2027.

Shoppers will be able to pay by simply tapping an eligible contactless credit or debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch at the register. Apple Pay and Google Pay are included. Customers and members can also add their eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club, or OnePay cards to digital wallets for contactless use.

“We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them,” Walmart said in its announcement. “Tap to Pay is a great addition to the other payment options already offered like cash, credit card or Walmart Pay.”

Walmart Pay, the company’s QR-code system through the Walmart app, will remain available. At Sam’s Club, members can continue using Scan & Go to scan items and pay while shopping, skipping traditional checkout lines altogether.

Indiana is home to more than 110 Walmart stores spread across the state, from Indianapolis and Fort Wayne to smaller communities. The change means everyday shoppers picking up groceries, household essentials, or fuel will no longer need to dig for a physical card or open an app in many cases.

Walmart had long been one of the last major retailers to resist standard NFC contactless payments, preferring its own systems. The company now frames the addition as part of a broader push to give customers more flexibility in managing and using their money.

No specific list of the first “select” stores has been released. Shoppers should check their local Walmart or Sam’s Club starting Monday to see if Tap to Pay is live. Full rollout across Indiana and the rest of the country is expected by year’s end.

For most Hoosiers, the update simply means checkout just got a little easier.
