Where Is Mike Pence—Indiana’s Most Famous and Greatest Underachiever

Few politicians in Indiana history were given more opportunities than Mike Pence.

After losing his first congressional race, Mike Pence was never the underdog many of his supporters imagined.

He grew up in a stable Indiana family, attended Hanover College, entered politics at a young age, and benefited from opportunities that most aspiring public officials never receive. Even though he refused to step out and support Trump in the 2016 primaries, Trump tapped him as his VP running mate for some reason never fully disclosed. Plus that was at a time when he likely would not have won reelection in Indiana,

Over the course of his career he became a congressman, governor, and ultimately Vice President of the United States—yet is sen as an underachiever at this juncture.

By any objective measure, Mike Pence an Indiana University lawyer, with little to no legal practice experience, rose higher than almost any politician in Indiana history only to be dumped by Trump and replaced with VP Vance, a Yale University Lawyer.

The reason many Hoosiers remain frustrated is not because he failed to achieve power or use his power which left him looking like just another liar and RINO.

Born into a very stable Indiana family, educated at Hanover College, elected to Congress, elevated to the Governor’s Office, Vice President of the United States, Pence enjoyed a political trajectory most public officials can only imagine. But for what?

Quite simply, the question many Hoosiers ask today is:

What lasting accomplishment justified all of that opportunity?

The conventional political biography focuses on the offices Pence held. His critics focus on what he failed to do while holding them.

Pence’s supporters once saw him as a principled conservative who would challenge entrenched interests and reshape government.

Instead, many now remember a politician who consistently chose caution over confrontation and accommodation over leadership.

As governor, Pence he chose DEI that has left a lasting negative imprint on Indiana’s judiciary. One of the most consequential decisions associated with his administration was his public support for Justice Loretta Rush’s elevation to Chief Justice of Indiana in 2014. Although Pence did not appoint Rush to the Indiana Supreme Court—that appointment was made by Governor Mitch Daniels—Pence publicly praised her selection and swore her into office as Chief Justice.

To many establishment observers, that was a positive moment.

To many of Pence’s conservative critics crying for HE to document his failings, it became another symbol of his tendency to embrace the existing power structure rather than challenge it.

Those critics argue that Indiana’s judiciary became increasingly insulated from public accountability during the years that followed.

There is little doubt that many grassroots conservatives who once championed Pence eventually became deeply disappointed with the direction of state government and his role on January 6, 2020 — when many felt that elections irregularities required delay and investigation — the numbers never added up and mail in ballots in pivotal Pennsylvania were ordered accepted without legislative approval which was required under “the rule of law.”

Pence acquiesced and said he was Constitutional when he was likelyignoring the Constitution protections he claimed to follow, appearing both hypocritical and ignorant. People remember him n as Dumb and an empty suit capable at debating and speech making but lacking in leadership and execution.

The same criticism would later be directed at Eric Holcomb, another Hanover College graduate who succeeded Pence as governor. Holcomb was frequently referred to by critics as “Governor Ho-Humm,” a nickname intended to suggest a lack of vision, urgency, or leadership, his support for China, and subservience to Loretta Rush and “her team.”

During the COVID era, opponents accused his administration of excessive executive control, prolonged emergency measures, and deference to bureaucratic institutions.

Those historically- proven criticisms reflected a broader frustration among many Indiana conservatives who believed state government had become managerial rather than transformational. “Next level” stupid— far from the state of Doc Bowen or even Evan Bayh. RINO DEI as demonstrated by a female lt. Gov. Known as the “Dutch-boy” behind her back.

That frustration inevitably circles back to Pence.

Holcomb was his replacement when left Indiana to campaign for the Trump Pence ticket. Many only learned Kate that both attended the same small inconsequential college.

Pence, not Mitch Daniels, was blamed not merely as another governor, but the politician who launched the modern Republican leadership pipeline in Indiana.

The governors, judges, administrators, and political culture that followed were, at least in part, products of the era he helped shape.

Then came the vice presidency.

No Indiana politician had ever occupied such a powerful position.

Again, for four years, Pence had access to the White House, Congress, foreign leaders, and virtually every major policy debate in the country. He stood at the center of history, right?

Yet when historians eventually evaluate that period, they may struggle to identify major initiatives uniquely associated with Mike Pence himself.

He was present for history. Outside of “Jan 6th” He rarely appeared to direct it.

His brief presidential campaign in 2024 exposed that reality. Voters knew who Mike Pence was. The problem was that many could not identify a compelling reason to elevate him further or again— if ever.

The campaign ended almost as quickly as it began. He will be forever forgotten only remembered for the fly on his white hair in a televised vice presidential debate.

Today, Pence remains active on the speaking circuit and in policy organizations. He is a requested speaker to civic and retirement groups.

Yet his influence over the future direction of either Indiana or the Republican Party appears limited.

The tragedy of the Pence story is not that he failed to obtain power— he underachieved after obtaining it,

It is that he obtained enormous power and, in the view of many former supporters, failed to use it to leave a consequential legacy.

History does not remember people simply because they occupied important offices.

It remembers those who changed the course of events.

Mike Pence had every opportunity to achieve greatness. He underachieved.

Many Hoosiers are still waiting to see where that legacy can be found. HE suggests he speak more, not less.
