Indianapolis, IN— In direct response to the Indianapolis City-County Council’s recent vote to conceal elected officials’ home addresses, Hoosier Enquirer is publishing addresses drawn from public campaign finance filings. We strongly oppose this effort to shield public officials from scrutiny and believe it violates Indiana State law requiring candidates to disclose their residences.

This publication upholds the principle of government transparency and complies with State requirements for candidates seeking office. Hoosier Enquirer, as a watchdog for Hoosier taxpayers, is exploring legal action alongside allies to challenge the Council’s ordinance and force compliance with State law.

Background: Council’s Move to Hide Addresses

This release follows the City-County Council Ethics Committee’s 4-1 vote on May 27, 2026, to advance a proposal removing home addresses from ethics disclosure forms. The move, prompted by safety concerns including a shooting incident at a councilor’s home, would limit public access to residential information while still requiring business addresses. The full Council was scheduled to consider it shortly thereafter.

Hoosier Enquirer opposes this decision. While we acknowledge legitimate safety concerns for public servants, elected officials must remain accountable to the voters who put them in office. Concealing home addresses reduces transparency and hinders voters’ ability to verify that officials live in the districts they represent.

State Law vs. Local Ordinance

Indiana law (including provisions under IC 3-8) requires candidates to provide their complete residence address when filing for office. This ensures eligibility and maintains public trust in the electoral process. Hoosier Enquirer contends that the Council’s new ordinance conflicts with these State requirements for candidates and public disclosure.

Our watchdog efforts will include examining options to sue the Indianapolis City-County Council to invalidate the ordinance and enforce compliance with State law. Hoosiers deserve officials who follow the rules they were elected to uphold.

Why This Matters

Voters have a fundamental right to know where their representatives live. These addresses, sourced from official campaign filings, demonstrate neighborhood ties and district residency. Publishing them promotes informed citizenship and counters efforts to limit oversight of local government.

Note: These details come from recent public campaign finance records with the Marion County Election Board and fact checking with our public records tool. Hoosier Enquirer prioritizes verified public information.

Hoosier Enquirer remains committed to transparency, even when it’s unpopular with those drunk with power. NO Elected Official is ABOVE THE LAW! We will continue monitoring this issue, including any lawsuit developments. Tips, additional public records, or support for our transparency efforts are welcome. Contact us today.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Journalist note: Supporting data centers has consequences. We never support violence but the people have spoken and the City County members ignored them. There are consequences to your (City Council) actions and hiding your address is not the answer.
