Ten felony counts of possessing child sex abuse material. Five thousand dollars surety to walk.

That is the bond Elkhart County set for 22-year-old Zakary DeFreese after police say they pulled multiple videos and images of child sexual abuse off devices at a Wood Street home — a ledger Northern Indiana parents should read twice.

DeFreese was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 30, and booked into the Elkhart County Jail, according to WNDU, WSBT, and ABC57. He faces 10 felony counts of possession of child sex abuse material. The charging documents state allegations only. DeFreese remains innocent in the eyes of the law until a conviction is entered.

Crypto tip, dark-web trail, Wood Street warrant

An Elkhart Police Department officer assigned to Indiana’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force reviewed a cyber tip about flagged cryptocurrency transactions believed tied to buying and selling child sex abuse material on the dark web, police told WNDU and WSBT.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for electronic devices at a residence in the 2200 block of Wood Street in Elkhart. Officers served it Wednesday and reported finding multiple CSAM videos and images, EPD said.

Online court records, cited by WNDU, list an initial hearing for Oct. 16. Bond stands at $5,000 surety — the figure WSBT and WNDU both reported after a judicial officer set it.

Ten counts, one soft number

Indiana treats possession of child sex abuse material as a serious felony path. Stacking ten counts against a single $5,000 surety bond is the public-safety question Elkhart County just put on the record: whether cash that small matches the scale of what ICAC says it recovered.

Nobody has to invent a theory to ask it. The tip, the warrant, the device finds, the charge sheet, and the bond amount are all on the local news record from Oct. 2. What a jury or a plea eventually does with DeFreese is a separate chapter. What Northern Indiana can already see is how cheap the release price looks next to ten child-exploitation felonies.
