Colts’ Keenan Allen Arrested on DUI Allegations Hours After Indianapolis Preseason Debut

INDIANAPOLIS — August 30, 2026 — The Indianapolis Colts woke Sunday morning to an unwelcome off-field problem involving one of the most accomplished players on their roster.

Veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen, a six-time Pro Bowl selection who recently joined Indianapolis, was arrested early Sunday in Indianapolis on preliminary allegations related to operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The arrest came only hours after Allen made his preseason debut for the Colts against the Detroit Lions.

According to jail records cited by multiple news organizations, Allen was booked on allegations described as operating while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.08 or greater and operating while intoxicated while endangering a person. Both are listed as misdemeanors. NBC Sports reported that Allen had not been formally charged as of its Sunday morning report.

That distinction matters. An arrest and preliminary allegations are not a conviction, and Allen is presumed innocent unless and until guilt is established through the legal process.

Colts: “Gathering More Information”

The Colts acknowledged the arrest Sunday morning but offered little indication of what, if anything, the organization intends to do.

“We are aware of the incident involving Keenan Allen last night,” the Colts said in a statement reported by OutKick and NBC Sports. “We are in the process of gathering more information and have no further comment at this time.”

The timing could hardly be worse for Indianapolis.

Allen had played Saturday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium as the Colts closed their preseason with a 25-16 loss to Detroit. He caught one pass for 24 yards in his first game action with Indianapolis. Hours later, he was in custody.

A Big Name Brought to Indianapolis

Allen isn’t an obscure player fighting for the last spot on an NFL roster. At 34, he arrives with one of the most productive résumés among active receivers.

He has accumulated 1,055 receptions, 12,051 receiving yards and 70 touchdown catches during his NFL career. He earned six Pro Bowl selections, including five consecutive appearances from 2017 through 2021 and another in 2023.

Most of that career was built with the Chargers. Allen also played for Chicago in 2024 before returning to the Chargers last season.

Indianapolis brought him aboard this month to strengthen a receiving corps that includes Alec Pierce and Josh Downs and to give the offense an experienced target.

That experience was part of Allen’s appeal. A veteran receiver with more than 1,000 NFL catches brings more than statistics to a young locker room; he is expected to bring reliability and leadership as well.

Sunday’s arrest therefore presents the Colts with a problem extending beyond whether Allen eventually faces criminal penalties. The organization must determine exactly what happened, whether league discipline could follow and whether the episode affects the role envisioned for him when the regular season begins.

What Happens Next

There are still important unanswered questions.

The circumstances leading police to stop or encounter Allen have not been fully established publicly, and preliminary jail allegations don’t tell the complete story of an arrest. The criminal process will determine whether prosecutors file charges and, ultimately, whether those allegations can be proven.

For the Colts, however, the football calendar won’t stop while the legal system works.

The regular season is approaching, roster decisions are being made and Indianapolis signed Allen because it believed a decorated veteran could still contribute. Instead, less than two weeks into his latest NFL stop, one of the team’s most recognizable offseason additions has become the subject of an Indianapolis police story.

That is not how either Allen or the Colts envisioned beginning their relationship.
