BREAKING: Serious Crash Closes I-70 in Both Directions as Medical Helicopter Lands on Interstate

Motorists report a complete Friday-afternoon shutdown while emergency crews respond; injuries and exact circumstances remain unconfirmed

INDIANA — Interstate 70 mile marker 131 involving 2 semis reportedly has closed in both directions Friday afternoon as emergency crews responded to an apparently serious traffic accident requiring a medical helicopter.

A Hoosier Enquirer eyewitness caught in the resulting traffic backup reported that vehicles were stopped in both directions. The medical helicopter reportedly circled the accident scene approximately three times before landing on or immediately beside the interstate.

The helicopter’s arrival indicates that emergency personnel requested rapid air transportation, but authorities have not yet released the number of people injured, the severity of their injuries or the types of vehicles involved. The cause of the crash also remains unknown.

The eyewitness account indicates that the shutdown occurred suddenly and affected both eastbound and westbound traffic. Police sometimes stop travel in both directions temporarily to establish a secure landing zone for a medical helicopter, even when the underlying collision occurred on only one side of the highway.

The Indiana Department of Transportation’s TrafficWise system was reporting a critical closure affecting westbound I-70 in Indianapolis during the developing incident. Hoosier Enquirer has not yet independently confirmed whether that listing corresponds to the accident witnessed Friday afternoon.

Motorists approaching the affected area should expect significant delays and keep the shoulders completely clear for ambulances, fire apparatus and police vehicles. Drivers already trapped in the backup should remain in their vehicles unless instructed otherwise by emergency personnel. They should not attempt to cross the median, reverse direction or use emergency turnarounds.

The landing of a medical helicopter does not by itself confirm a fatality. Air ambulances are commonly requested when a patient may require immediate treatment at a trauma center or when roadway congestion would substantially delay ground transportation.

Indiana State Police and local first responders are expected to release additional information after patients have been transported, the scene has been secured and investigators have completed their preliminary assessment.

This is a developing story. The Hoosier Enquirer will update this report when the accident’s precise location, vehicles involved, injuries and reopening schedule are officially confirmed.
