As Indiana’s 4th Congressional District Republican primary approaches on May 5, new details are emerging about the health history of incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Baird, raising concerns among voters and some within his own circle about transparency and his ability to continue serving.
Sources with direct knowledge from Rep. Baird’s congressional office have confirmed to Hoosier Enquirer that the 80-year-old lawmaker was in hospice care for approximately 18 months, beginning in February 2024 and continuing through much of last year. According to these individuals, Baird was diagnosed with cancer as well as heart-related issues but did not publicly disclose the extent of his medical challenges.
A former staff member who worked in Baird’s office told Hoosier Enquirer that the congressman’s health was visibly deteriorating during this period. The source said concerns grew significant enough that they and others encouraged Baird to retire rather than pursue another term in Congress.
Baird, who turned 80 in June 2025, has represented Indiana’s 4th District since 2019 after serving eight years in the Indiana House of Representatives. He has continued to be active in Washington, including serving on committees focused on agriculture, foreign affairs, and science. In January 2026, Baird and his wife Danise were involved in a serious car accident in Washington, D.C., which resulted in hospitalization for both. Baird was discharged after less than 24 hours and was reported to be in stable condition with expectations of a full recovery at the time. Tragically, Danise Baird later passed away in March 2026 from complications related to injuries sustained in that crash.
The congressman has not issued a detailed public statement addressing the earlier hospice period or his ongoing health status amid the primary challenge from state Rep. Craig Haggard. Baird’s campaign has instead highlighted his legislative record, support from President Donald Trump—who endorsed the incumbent earlier this year—and his commitment to Hoosier values on issues like border security, agriculture, and economic growth.
Haggard, a Marine veteran and conservative from Mooresville, has gained momentum with endorsements including one from Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita. Haggard’s campaign has emphasized the need for energetic, new leadership in the district.
The 4th District has long been a reliably Republican seat, but the primary has drawn attention due to the contrast between the incumbent’s experience and calls for fresh representation. Public records and recent news coverage confirm Baird’s age and recent accident, but details of any prior extended medical leave or hospice care have remained largely out of the public eye until now.
Voters in the district deserve full transparency from candidates, especially in a role as demanding as U.S. Representative. Questions about a lawmaker’s capacity to serve effectively—particularly at an advanced age with reported serious medical history—warrant honest discussion rather than evasion.
Hoosier Enquirer reached out to Rep. Baird’s office for comment on these health-related reports but did not receive a response by press time. We will continue monitoring developments in this race and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
