INDIANAPOLIS (HOOSIER ENQUIRER) — Tragedy struck early Tuesday morning in the heart of downtown Indianapolis when a hit-and-run incident claimed the life of a pedestrian. The accident occurred just before 7:50 a.m. at the intersection of West Michigan and North Illinois streets, not far from the Indiana War Memorial.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers were dispatched to the scene where they found an unresponsive woman with severe trauma injuries. Despite the swift response, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle responsible for the collision fled before law enforcement could arrive, and details about the suspect's vehicle have yet to be released to the public.

Road Closures Impacting Traffic:

- West Michigan Street: Closed from North Capitol Avenue to North Meridian Street.

- North Illinois Street: Closed from West Vermont Street to West North Street.

These closures are expected to remain in place for several hours, significantly impacting morning commutes. IMPD has advised drivers to avoid the area and find alternative routes to bypass the congestion.

The incident has sparked concerns about pedestrian safety in busy urban areas, especially where traffic is dense during peak hours. Local officials are likely to review traffic patterns and pedestrian safety measures in this part of the city in light of this tragic event.

The community and local authorities are calling for anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run to come forward. IMPD is actively investigating and encourages witnesses or those with dashcam footage to contact them at their non-emergency number or through anonymous tips.

As the investigation continues, the identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. This incident has once again highlighted the critical need for awareness and responsibility on the roads to prevent such devastating losses.
